Both of my site visits were helpful in that my evaluator was able to answer questions I had during my rotation and feedback was offered on the patient notes I had written. Having been in the ED by the time of my initial evaluation I only had SOAP notes to present to my evaluator. Overall the feedback I got on them was positive, but I did not put the most likely diagnosis in my assessment. I realize now my mistake, but during my time in the ED I has seen many practitioners do the same. This underscores the myriad ways different people practice and was a good lesson in how I may have to alter my note style for future rotations. That being said, I will be including the diagnosis in my assessment moving forward.
Another part of the assessment I found beneficial is the pharm cards review. I am sure we were told this at some point, and it is probably in the handbook, but I had not been prepared to be quizzed on my classmate’s pharm cards. In some areas I did well, but it also became apparent what areas of pharmacology I am weak on. Finally, it was really interesting for me to hear what my classmate’s experiences were while on rotation, the interesting cases she had seen as well as her own presentation style. I find that as I am embarking on my rotations, I am able to learn not only from my superiors, but my peers and I find that the site evaluations provide a great opportunity for both.
