Recently published systematic literature review on the association of PrEP use with condoms use, STI incidence and change in sexual behaviors, such as anal sex and number of partners in MSM. Achieved through an adapted Cochrane Collaboration domain-based assessment tool and the Mix Methods Appraisal Tool. Ten studies were included of which 3 were RTCs, one began as an RTC but was changed to an open-label trial, one community open-label trial, one prospective cohort, one survey, two mixed methods, and one qualitative study. Methods and inclusion criteria varied across the studies and are outlined in greater detail in the paper. The main takeaways are:
- PrEP services provide an opportunity for MSM to access sexual health care, testing, treatment and counselling that would not be accessed otherwise
- STI rates are high in this population, but no conclusive evidence was found that PrEP leads to an increase in risky sexual behaviors
- Counselling regarding condom use and STI testing at every encounter improved compliance and should be a fundamental component of PrEP services
- How PrEP effects condom use is challenging to interpret from the available data as the majority of data available used self-report condom use with a low response rate
